Update on Schwaben AC/Hamburg Exchange This Week

Traveling from Chicago’s Sister City, Hamburg, 21 players and nine officials from the top U14 team (Hamburger Fussballverband) arrived in Buffalo Grove on Sunday September 30th to spend 9 days with the Schwaben AC.

Building on the soccer friendship that began in 2002, Schwaben is invested in cultivating international relationships between players as an important component to grow the love for the game. Schwaben AC hopes to expand this program to other teams, both girls and boys, in the future.

The Hamburg group has enjoyed a reception at the German Consulate in Chicago, a Cubs game, Chicago Fire game and a trip to Willis Tower and the Skydeck. One Hamburg player expressed that the Skydeck was, “…the best experience I’ve ever had in my life.” In addition, the players went on a tour of Stevenson High School and were very impressed with the size of the school. They expressed excitement for being able to play an impromptu game in the gym with some of the students.

The German players will get to experience life in an American family as each player will be hosted by a Schwaben family for the day on Saturday.

Schwaben AC and the Hamburger Fussballverband are scheduled to play a game on Saturday October 6th at 4pm at Schwaben in Buffalo Grove with a BBQ dinner to follow for all the players and parents.

Schwaben AC Marches in the German Day Parade

This past Saturday Schwaben AC marched in the Von Steuben Parade that was part of the 3-day German Day festival that took place in Lincoln Square in Chicago. We had a great showing of kids and parents this year to represent the club. The kids threw candy and mini soccer balls to the crowd.

For the first time in several years Schwaben AC had a tent selling food and a bar inside the main tent selling beer. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped staff each tent and introduce the club to the hundreds of people at the festival!

Schwaben AC Invited to Visit Chicago Soccer

Our friends at Chicago Soccer invited the club to visit their store after the German Day Parade on Saturday. They were also kind enough to offer a discount to every Schwaben player. The kids had fun checking out the new soccer gear before heading over to the Schwaben food tent for lunch.
BUFFALO GROVE DAY PARADE
We had a record number of Schwaben parade members! We are very proud to have Schwaben represented so well in the community. Thanks for coming out and showing your support.

Hope to see the same turnout next Saturday at the German Day Fest!
National Soccer Coaches Association of America Diploma Classes at Schwaben

Schwaben AC will be hosting two NSCAA Youth Level Diploma classes in September, Youth Level I & Youth Level II. We encourage all parents to take advantage of these courses to educate themselves on the game of soccer as a whole. In addition, these are good courses for players to take that are interested in knowing more about the game of soccer and might be interested in coaching soccer in the future. There is no testing for either level.

The Youth Level I course content includes philosophy of coaching youth, risk management strategies, organization of practice sessions and activities appropriate to players of this age.

The Youth Level II course is directed toward the person newly involved in coaching soccer. It is designed to help coaches working with players in the 5- to 10-year age range. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the physiological and psychological differences of coaching children.

Youth Level I Course: September 21 from 4pm - 7pm at Banquet Hall
Youth Level II Course: September 21 from 4pm - 10pm at Banquet Hall

If you would like to attend just the Level I please register for this course only and you will be done at 7pm. If you would like to attend both courses then you will stay until 10pm and need to register for the Youth Level II course.

German Day Festival

We have a big weekend coming up! For the first time in several years Schwaben AC will have a booth selling beer and food at the German Day Festival in Lincoln Square September 7, 8, and 9th. This is a huge opportunity for the club to get more exposure and introduce ourselves to hundreds of people.

Schwaben will be participating in the Von Steuben Parade on Saturday. The Germany Day website notes that this parade is a celebration of Baron Friedrich von Steuben, who came to this country as a volunteer offering his services to General George Washington. The annual Von Steuben Parade is the German American Event of the year. More information can be found on the website: http://www.germanday.com/von_steuben_parade.html

The Germany Day festival begins on Friday evening and runs through Sunday. Come down and support the club and enjoy the party. We need volunteers to help run the Schwaben booth. This is a very good opportunity to work your volunteer hours, learn about German culture and be apart of one of the biggest German festivals in the area. For more information on the festival: http://www.germanday.com/german_day_festival.html

We will need the help of many volunteers, please contact John Gavrila to volunteer. Requests for specific time slot will be on a first-come, first served basis.

Here are the shift hours:

Friday: 5pm - 11pm
Saturday: 12pm - 5pm
Saturday: 5pm - 11pm
Sunday: 12pm - 5pm
Sunday: 5pm - 10pm

See you there!
